We experimentally demonstrate a convexity-based method for extracting the Brillouin frequency shift in Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry (BOCDR). The method enhances the Brillouin signal by exploiting the difference in convexity between the true signal and background noise without modifying the optical/electrical setup. Experiments show that the measurable temperature dynamic range was extended from 80 °C to 120 °C and a 0.45-m heated section shorter than the theoretical spatial resolution was detected. The results verify that the proposed signal-processing technique significantly improves the effective performance and reliability of BOCDR for distributed fiber sensing applications.
